Roman Shleynov, investigations section editor of Novaya Gazeta in Moscow and a founding member of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, has been named the winner of the 2008 Transparency International (TI) Integrity Award.

TI, a global coalition against corruption, recognized Shleynov for his “relentless pursuit of the truth and exposure of public corruption.” Novaya Gazeta has published stories about the dishonest business dealings of the Russian nuclear minister and about Russian Special Services officials operating a furniture smuggling and money laundering scheme. Such stories, the TI judges said, “have shed light on the dangers of corruption in all of its manifestations and how it undermines democracy, accountability and the rule of law.”

Shleynov has reported for OCCRP on tobacco smuggling and the failure of the Russian legal system to prosecute organized crime figures or corrupt politicians.

Shleynov’s job is one of the most dangerous faced by journalists anywhere in the world. He has repeatedly been interrogated by Russian agents. He has lost one partner to an alleged poisoning, and another, famous colleague Anna Politkovskaya, to guns. Earlier this month, a lawyer working for the publication was killed and a student-reporter injured by a gunman who attacked them at a metro station.

“We regret,” the TI judges wrote, “that Novaya Gazeta continues to pay a high price for its independent and groundbreaking reporting.”
